Barcelona’s opera house, the Gran Teatre del Liceu, was created in 1847 on one of the city’s main thoroughfare, La Rambla. Since its opening, this historic building has maintained its role as a cultural and artistic center in the city. In terms of seating capacity, it was the largest opera house in Europe during its first 100 years of existence, and the first opera house that existed in Catalonia and in Spain.
During 2022, the Gran Teatre del Liceu will reach its 175-year anniversary with a special program and various initiatives to celebrate it.
The opera house is currently publically owned and administered by the Gran Teatre del Liceu Foundation, which includes the Catalan Regional Government (Generalitat de Catalunya), the Barcelona City Council, Barcelona Provincial Council and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport, as well as the Patronage Council and the Gran Teatre del Liceu Society.
